Oh my god! They have microphones!

I have been swamped with work that I haven’t written in awhile. A few interesting things have happened. That day, my boss asked my friend(the one who knew the cute guy in 'the hazy influence' and she’s my closest friend at work) and I to attend a meeting on his behalf. When we saw the letter of invitation to the meeting, nothing on it makes sense. The list of would be attendees are also mind-boggling. Why? Because they are all datuks (just like lady and lords in th UK) and royalties! What kind of meeting is this? Well…at that time your guess was as good as mine. My friend and I, we told each other to just go and smile. We don’t have to say anything, just smile and leave when the thing ends and everything will be ok. Since the meeting was in the city, we had planned to go do some shopping after that. We arrived about half and hour before the meeting and registered and went to the loo to freshen up our already fresh faces.

Then we were ushered to the room where the meeting is to be held. We went in and the first thing I saw were microphones placed on the table in front of every seat in the oval shaped big table. I grabbed my friend’s hand and said, oh yeah, we have decided that the phrase I said is the phrase of the day. Ok… I said “Oh my god! They have microphones!”. My friend almost dragged me to the seat. If there are microphones then this is not a meeting, it is more like a discussion. What are we to say when we are clueless of the whole meeting’s agenda? Daah! Then I saw each one of us has been given a rather thick envelope. When I took the content out, it was filled with documents in chapters! Geez! What have we got ourselves into? Correction! What had we done that we were given this punishment.

Then the meeting started and we just kept quite every time when the (Datuk) chairman asked to comment on the chapters. They were 7 chapters to be discussed. I was paying attention to all of them and trying to read and make sense of the acts, the government jargons, the words, the purpose of the whole thing and it was beginning to make sense until my mind wondered to the malls and what I need to buy later. Damn! Mind! I was doing the mind wondering thing around when we reached chapter 6. My attention swayed a little. You need to cut me some slack ok, it was fasting month and it was 11.45am and we have been discussing for nearly two hours plus without any break. As I was saying that in my mind then I heard “ Let’s ask the two ladies that are present”. Then all eyes were on us. I turned to my friend “ Oh god! What was the question? I didn’t hear the question?” My friend looked at me and said under her breath “What are we suppose to say”. Then I remembered “ Something about the media”. Thank god for giving me a friend that will brace through fire with me. She started talking to the mic. I told her “you need to switch it on first”. I thought I was helping because it was crucial that I contribute something to the tense situation. Later I realized that I sounded like an ass. Anyway, she said something, which I couldn’t remember because I was praying to god to let us make it through this. I guess her comment was taken it well. Then the chairman said “ are you done or is there anything else you want to add”. She said something else and that didn’t go very well with the crowd but the chairman was very nice to let us down gently. Then they moved on to the next chapter! Eyes weren’t fixed on us anymore. God! We survived the hurricane! Hoo! Hoo! I felt like going up on the table and started dancing some girl power song( Don’t Cha? By the PCD? My other zany friend would disagree that the song is in a girl power category but more on the annoying song from hell category) and kicking all the microphones down. But just imagining me doing that and seeing the shock faces of all the elderly Datuks and Tunku, makes me want to laugh! So scrap that idea!

After the meeting we went to see the chairman and this time I said something and he gave us his card and ask us to contact him with inputs. Cool! After that my friend said, “ let’s go shopping!
